DENVER—The Denver-area transit agency says a bus driver has resigned after going the wrong way in an express lane on a downtown freeway.

The driver had to get around gates and ignore signs to go north in the Interstate 25 high-occupancy vehicle lane Wednesday morning. The lane was set up to handle only southbound traffic.

The Regional Transportation District says no passengers were on the bus. No collisions were reported, but some commuters said they had to pull over to avoid the bus.

Denver police declined to issue a citation because no officer witnessed the incident.

The driver’s name hasn’t been released.

RTD spokesman Scott Reed says the agency will investigate the incident to see if it needs to change any procedures.
