GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A western Colorado mom whose lawyer says she wanted to be cool has been sentenced to three years of probation for buying alcohol for her teenage daughter and four underage friends.

Forty-two-year-old Julie Ann Flynn was sentenced Friday for sponsoring the party last New Year’s Eve. She told the judge that she took the teens to a liquor store and then allowed them to drink and smoke marijuana at her house.

She said she “wanted the kids to have fun.” Flynn’s lawyer said she was trying to be a cool mom.

Flynn pleaded guilty to a felony count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and a misdemeanor count of child abuse. The woman was also ordered to enroll in parenting classes and abstain from alcohol.
