RENO, Nev. — Matt Bettencourt eagled the 11th hole, then held off Bob Heintz by a stroke Sunday to win for the first time on the PGA Tour.
Bettencourt capped his 4-under- par 68 with a bogey on No. 18 after a birdie on 17, finishing the Reno- Tahoe Open at 11-under 277 on Sunday.
After his eagle on the par-5 11th, Bettencourt played the final seven holes in 1-over. He also bogeyed the par-4 14th at the Montreux Golf & Country Club.
Heintz (69) missed a 3-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have forced a playoff.
• Former Broncos quarterback John Elway finished in a tie for second place with 65 points in modified Stableford scoring at the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament in State- line, Nev. Elway was tied with former Braves pitcher John Smoltz and actor Jack Wagner. Former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver won his third title at the event with 84 points.
• Tommy Gainey shot a 3-under-par 69 to become the Nationwide Tour’s first two-time winner this season, earning a three-stroke victory at the Chiquita Classic in Cincinnati.
Finalists set for poker showdown
LAS VEGAS — A weary group of card sharks, exhausted by a no- limit Texas Hold ’em session that ended nearly 18 hours after its first hand, scored nearly $812,000 each at the World Series of Poker and a ticket for a November finale worth $8.94 million to the winner.
Nine players have 111 days before meeting again at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to play for additional prize money held in an interest- bearing account.
Jonathan Duhamel, 22, of Boucherville, Quebec, finished with the chip lead with nearly 66 million chips.
Donovan leads L.A. victory
WASHINGTON — Landon Donovan‘s penalty kick in the second half gave the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 win over D.C. United in a Major League Soccer game.
It was Donovan’s first goal since the World Cup, where he led the United States with three goals.
• Georgios Samaras‘ penalty kick and Patrick McCourt‘s second-half goal gave Celtic FC a 2-1 exhibition win over the Sounders FC in Seattle.
