SILT, Colo.—A natural gas drilling company is getting ready to drill new wells near the towns of Silt and New Castle.
Denver-based Antero Resources plans to drill 284 wells on 6,500 acres, most of it on public land.
The Bureau of Land Management says it approved the project’s environmental study on Friday. The public will be able to review the plan this week on the BLM’s Web site.
Silt and New Castle have raised concerns about the project. One big issue for them is making sure there’s an emergency response plan to protect groundwater if there’s a spill of fracturing fluids. In a process known as fracking, water, sand and chemicals are injected underground to help release gas.
Drilling is expected to begin late this summer or early in the fall.
