DENVER—No charges will be filed against Denver police officers involved in a shootout outside a fast-food restaurant parking lot that wounded a bystander.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey says the two officers were justified in firing their service weapons at Sorl Shead, who police say fired at least four shots from a 9mm handgun.

Bullet fragments struck a woman on both her legs and her lower torso as she walked through the restaurant’s parking lot and then took cover. Her injuries were described as non-life threatening.

No other injuries were reported.

In his decision letter, Morrissey called the woman’s wounding “unintended and very unfortunate.”

Shead faces first-degree assault and prohibited use of a weapon charges.
