Photographing baseball is a hurry-up-and-wait affair. Besides capturing some minor nuances of the game as well as the big celebration shots, most of the time is spent in the photographers’ pit simply waiting for the action.
Unless there are coaches with binoculars in the bullpen (hello, Philadelphia), not much happens in the downtime between home runs and strikeouts.
Having covered 32 Rockies games at Coors Field this season, Denver Post photojournalist John Leyba has had some downtime between plays to record an alternate view of the game. He shot pictures that didn’t necessarily follow the arc of the game story printed in the sports section the next day, but they still reveal details of the game and the team.
Leyba’s look provides details and sights that make the game unique to Denver. These are a selection of the photographs he made while waiting for that next big play.
