People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a federal complaint Tuesday against Colorado Serum Co., an animal- medicine manufacturer, alleging its vaccine tests on hamsters are inhumane.

The complaint to the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Denver- based CSC unnecessarily tested vaccine potencies using hamsters, ignoring an Animal Welfare Act requirement for companies to diligently search for live-test alternatives. The complaint said alternative tests achieve the same goal.

CSC vice president Randy Berrier said PETA has “harassed” the company for ensuring the vaccines’ effectiveness.

“We are doing USDA-regulated testing and required testing,” he said.
