Federal forestry and Colorado officials plan to unveil a deal today to preserve a 2,786-acre mountain ranch owned by the YMCA that hosts low-income children and war veterans.

The conservation easement deal prevents housing and commercial development on the YMCA of the Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch, located north of Winter Park, and provides $6 million to the YMCA.

Great Outdoors Colorado used $1 million in lottery proceeds, and the U.S. Forest Service’s legacy forest fund contributed $5 million in the deal, arranged with help from the Conservation Fund and others.

The deal permanently protects wildlife and riparian habitat, more than 50 miles of recreational trails and recovering beetle-killed forest on the ranch.
