DENVER—Dr. Ned Calonge is leaving his post as Colorado’s chief medical officer after eight years to head one of the state’s largest foundations.

Calonge plans to take over as president of the Colorado Trust, a $360 endowment that awarded nearly $22 million in grants last year to improve health care in the state. The 55-year-old Calonge says he’ll work part-time at the trust and the state health department from September to November, when he will become the trust’s full-time chief executive.

Calonge said it’s likely the state health department will name a temporary replacement for him until a new governor takes office in January.
