Cyclists are getting their first opportunity to race bottom to top on America’s most famous mountain Sunday — but it’s going to cost them. The inaugural Assault on the Peak will take its toll literally and figuratively when up to 1,500 cyclists take on the 24.5-mile, 7,700- vertical-foot challenge of riding Pikes Peak from Manitou Springs. Riders will be timed in this tough but technically noncompetitive event beginning at Memorial Park in Man- itou and ending at the 14,110-foot mountain summit. Support will be offered at stations throughout the route on roads closed to non- event vehicles. Entry fees for the USA Cycling-certified event are $150 to the summit and $90 to 11,440-foot Glen Cove, just below tree line. The Assault will be the first bike race on the mountain since the Pikes Peak Mountain Bike Challenge, last held on the upper few miles of the highway in 2000. Afterward, riders are welcome to coast back down.
