SUPERIOR — Two sisters, ages 13 and 2, were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after their Superior condo caught fire while they were home alone Thursday afternoon. The blaze spread into the five surrounding units.

Their injuries were not serious and they were expected to be released Thursday night. One firefighter was also treated as a precaution.

Flames engulfed the six-unit building at 2855 Rock Creek Circle, displacing about 15 people, said Cmdr. Rick Brough of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Three units are a total loss; the other three sustained heavy damage and are uninhabitable, he said. The radiant heat melted windows in one of two adjacent buildings, both of which have been evacuated, Brough said.

None of the buildings had sprinkler systems, which weren’t required because they were built before the current building code, he said.

The girls called 911 and their parents before leaving the building when the fire started at 2:10 p.m. Their dad, Hadi Hashami, said his older daughter heard the smoke alarm start beeping, and grabbed her 2-year-old sister, then called 911 and ran outside.
