FORT CARSON, Colo.—Members of Colorado’s congressional delegation say Fort Carson is one of two Army bases in the running to house a 2,700-solider aviation brigade.
The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that the Army will decide between the base south of Colorado Springs and the Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Wash., as early as next year after environmental reviews are done.
The two bases are the only Army Posts with combat divisions that lack major aviation units.
U.S. Rep Doug Lamborn says Fort Carson doesn’t have to expand its training site in southeastern Colorado to train the helicopter crews.
Ranchers and other landowners oppose the Army’s efforts to expand the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site near La Junta (lah-HUN’-tah).
