A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after falling nearly 20 feet at the new Denver jail on Saturday.

Captain Frank Gale, public information officer of the Denver Sheriff Department, said the inmate deliberately jumped from the 2nd-floor tier immediately after his cell door was opened for daily cleaning.

Phil Champagne, spokesman for Denver Fire Department, who responded to the incident, said the man sustained serious injuries to his lower body as he fell on the concrete at Van Cise-Simonet Detention Facility.

The man is not being identified.
