MEEKER, Colo.—Helicopters have begun rounding up wild horses in northwestern Colorado over the objections of animal advocacy groups.
The roundup started Monday. Over the coming days, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to gather about 140 horses into corrals. It says the animals have moved outside of public land designated for wild horses.
Groups including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals filed suit last week to try to stop the round up.
BLM spokesman David Boyd said the suit includes specific objections to rounding up the approximately 60 horses in the North Piceance(PEE’-ants) area. With the case pending, Boyd said the BLM will not gather horses there for now.
The ASPCA says it still objects to the roundup.
