Dathan Ritzenhein pulled out of the Denver Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon Wednesday, saying race organizers were unable to assemble a deep enough field on short notice with the funding they had available.
“We wanted to get into an actual race where we’d have other people to run against,” Ritzenhein said from Albuquerque, where he’s training. “With the lack of time — and funding, really — we couldn’t turn it into much more than a glorified training run.”
Ritzenhein, the top American finisher at the 2008 Olympic men’s marathon and a former distance runner at the University of Colorado, said he had intended to use the Denver race as a tuneup before the Nov. 7 New York City Marathon. The Wyoming women’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West Conference this season in poll of MWC coaches and media members who cover the league. Colorado State was picked to finish eighth and Air Force ninth. Texas Christian, the defending champion, was picked to finish first.
Wyoming’s Hillary Carlson, a 6-foot-3 senior forward from Cheyenne who averaged 15.6 points last season, was named to the preseason all-MWC team.

Wyoming’s game times for the Cancun Challenge, a men’s basketball tournament in Cancun, Mexico, have been finalized.
The Cowboys’ tournament opener against Missouri on Nov. 23 will start at 5 p.m. Mountain time. In the second round of the tournament on Nov. 24, the Cowboys will play La Salle or Providence. If they win their opener, the Cowboys will play their second-round game at 7:30 p.m. If they lose their opener, the Cowboys will play at 5 p.m.
Other teams in the Cancun Challenge are Morgan State, North Florida, Prairie View A&M and West- ern Illinois. The Cowboys will play two tournament games in Laramie before traveling to Cancun. They will host North Florida on Nov. 18 and Western Illinois on Nov. 20.
