She’s back. Pat “Gabby Gourmet” Miller is just out with the 25th edition of her popular “Restaurant Guide.” And, of course, it’s bigger and better than ever at 528 pages and more than 500 restaurant reviews.
“I started writing these when I was 6,” says Miller, as we wonder how she’s done it for 25 editions. “And every year I say it’s going to be smaller, and every year it’s bigger.”
In this digital age, this is still a printed book worth having. Everything you need is here. But never to be left at the station, Miller is coming out with a Gabby Gourmet iPhone app in the spring.
She did not drop any restaurants from her top “Heavenly” roster this year. In fact, she added four. We may not agree on all her choices, but as Miller says, “It’s my football.”
So here are the best of the best (drumroll, please): Barolo Grill, D-Bar Desserts, Elway’s Cherry Creek, Frasca Food & Wine, Fruition, L’Atelier, Mizuna, Panzano, Rioja, Root Down, Shanahan’s and Table 6.
New to this edition is a listing of Miller’s favorite dishes around town, two pages that include liver at Strings, egg salad at Masterpiece Deli, biscuits at Lucile’s, fried chicken at Castle Cafe, French fries at Ajax Tavern in Aspen, mac and cheese at Argyll, Pad Thai at Bangkok Cafe.
The book — which makes a great stocking stuffer — is at bookstores today.
Big and fat.
Kathleen Nevin gave up being a chiropractor about two years ago to open Big Fat Cupcake in Cherry Creek. That was after she fought off breast cancer, which led to her losing her house in foreclosure.
She’s doing better at cupcakes than at cracking backs — and she’s just out with the Girls of Big Fat Cupcake 2011 Calendar.
“My staff is super cute,” says Nevin. “So I thought, why not combine sex and cupcakes?” Each month features a pic of a comely citizen, most often offering up a cupcake like Betty Draper giving Don a scotch on the rocks. My favorite is publicist Christina Brickley, sharing a cupcake with a wooden statue.
Sales of the calendar will go to the foundation to raise money for cancer patients who need help for mortgages or rent. Big Fat CupCake is holding a release party, 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Second Home — $35 gets you in, and gets you a calendar and a cupcake. The calendars are available for $19.95 at the cupcake store and various Cherry Creek North shops.
Peter jeans.
Blu is a local boutique at 3201 E. 2nd Ave. — and it’s the first stop for former Avs player Peter Forsberg when he passes through town. Seems Blu carries Stitches jeans — which he cannot get in Sweden, so he recently came in for the second time and cleaned the store out of his size.
City spirit.
Are you smarter than Jeff Foxworthy? He’s the headliner at the Girls Night Out funder party Nov. 4 at the Hyatt DTC. . . . Steve Olsen and his dad band Mid-Life Crisis sang happy birthday to Lisa Olsen at Star Bar in LoDo on Saturday night. . . .
