For years LoDo has been known for sports bars and micro-breweries, but the addition of to this buzzing part of the city has no doubt put Denver in the running as one of the best live music destinations in the country.
With matte black paint covering the walls and chain link fences lining the balcony, the Summit is the perfect setting for a rock show—and last night Massachusetts metal powerhouse delivered a great one.
The night got off to a solid start with hardcore/pop foursome And She Whispered and Chicago’s Born of Osiris, the latter of which is the most recent addition to the tour. Rounding out the support bands for the night was Asking Alexandria, a high-energy five-piece that almost stole the show with its choreographed head banging and impressive, simultaneous water-spitting. The English metalcore band doesn’t stray outside the trend of tight jeans, generic breakdowns and synthesized dance/pop backing tracks. But it proved last night that, although it isn’t unique, that formula works so well simply because it is incredibly entertaining to watch.
By the time 10:30 p.m. rolled around and the house lights went off, the raucous roar of the Wednesday night crowd could be heard from out on the steet. Yes, on any given night of the week, Denver is a true rock/metal city.
All That Remains hit the stage hard and wasted no time getting the crowd familiar with songs from their latest album “For We Are Many,” which the band proudly announced had reached the Billboard Top 10 that morning — including songs such as “Now Let Them Tremble,” “For We Are Many” and “Hold On.”
Front man Phil Labonte was the best he’s been in years, and the sound inside the venue was incredible. The band’s set was nearly flawless, and it included just about every crowd favorite a fan could ask for including “Not Alone,” “Become the Catalyst” and “The Air that I Breathe” from 2006’s “Fall of Ideals.” There was also “Forever in Your Hands” and “Two Weeks,” which served as the fast-paced finale of the show, from 2008’s “Overcome.”
From start to finish, the performance was as solid as it gets, but their biggest single, “This Calling,” provided the biggest highlight of the night. The song is a staple at an All That Remains concert and one of the most impactful live metal songs out there. Every able body in the house was singing along with fists in the air and drinks in hand — one of many rock ‘n’ roll memories to come at Summit Music Hall.
