BOULDER — Going to the chapel has fallen seriously out of fashion in Boulder.
According to data from the American Community Survey, just one-third of Boulder residents over the age of 15 are married, down from almost 39 percent a decade ago, making Boulder the least-married city in Colorado.
Marriage rates have fallen nationwide for decades, as more couples live together without getting married and the average age of marriage rises, experts said.
In one sense, Boulder is simply following that trend. Amy Wilkins, an assistant professor of sociology who teaches a course on Family and Society at the University of Colorado, said the poverty rate among people under 34 has been rising.
“People don’t want to get married unless they have economic stability, unless they think they can support a family,” Wilkins said.
