WASHINGTON — Law enforcement officials say a source inside the Muslim community provided the first tip that a Pakistani-born man in suburban Washington was trying to join a terrorist group.
That tip in early January led to an elaborate ruse in which authorities say Farooque Ahmed began helping plan a purported attack on the Washington subway system.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
Ahmed was arrested Wednesday, just weeks before the FBI says he planned to make the annual pilgrimage to the Islamic holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. He faces a detention hearing today.
