FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas receiver Greg Childs will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
On Monday, coach Bobby Petrino said Childs, who leads the Razorbacks with 46 catches for 659 yards and six touchdowns, suffered a patella tendon injury Saturday against Vanderbilt, but didn’t injure any knee ligaments. The junior will undergo surgery this week and is expected to need four to six months of recovery time.
• Mississippi State defensive end Nick Bell is in intensive care after emergency surgery in Birmingham, Ala., after it was found Sunday that his cancer has spread. Bell began experiencing headaches in September and had surgery Oct. 1 to remove a mass on his brain. The mass was diagnosed as a form of skin cancer.
• Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez has a sprained right ankle, not a bone bruise in his leg as coach Bo Pelini initially said. Martinez is expected be ready for Saturday’s game at Iowa State.
Pelini also said cornerback Alfonzo Dennard is day to day after a collision with teammate Courtney Osborne left him with a concussion.
• Vanderbilt running back Warren Norman is scheduled to have surgery on a dislocated right wrist today, knocking the Commodores’ top rusher (459 yards on 77 carries) out for the rest of the season.
• North Carolina cornerback Terry Shankle will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.
• Florida freshman safety Jonathan Dowling is no longer on the team because of an undisclosed rules violation.
NFL tops World Series on TV
NEW YORK — The “Sunday Night Football” matchup between the past two Super Bowl champions was watched by 18.1 million people, compared with 15.5 million for Game 4 of the World Series.
NBC said it was the first time an NFL game earned a higher rating than the World Series, though the two have rarely aired at the same time over the years.
The San Francisco Giants’ 4-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Fox earned a 9.0 rating and 15 share. The New Orleans Saints’ 20-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on NBC had a 10. 7/17.
