LONDON — Security has improved since U.S. Marines replaced British troops in a volatile area of southern Afghanistan, an Afghan official said Wednesday.
Gulabuddin Mangal, governor of Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, said the American military had better resources and finances to deal with insurgent violence in and around the town of Sangin.
Marines took responsibilities for Sangin in September.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan on Wednesday, Taliban militants carried out three attacks against Afghan security forces, targeting a police station, a border patrol and an army checkpoint in strikes that left 12 people dead, officials said.
Meanwhile, NATO said insurgents killed two coalition service members in separate incidents in the country’s north and south.
