Having just relocated to Denver from Austin about a year ago, Brothers O’Hair have quickly made an impression on the Mile High City. With heartfelt lyrics, passionate performances and a captivating, well-oiled live show, the quartet of Adam Anglin, Andrew Burrow, Joe Mills and Jon Aisner delivers its punked-up country-folk-rock with consistently impressive excitement and expertise. If the Decemberists were less precious or the Pogues were less drunk, they might sound a bit like Brothers O’Hair.
Brothers O’Hair will release their self-titled debut at the Larimer Lounge on Saturday, with support from and . The $8 ticket also gets your a free copy of the EP. While the record doesn’t quite capture the energy and intensity of the band’s live performance, it’ll make an excellent souvenir of a superb show. Get pumped for the show by stealing “Philosophy Conversation” right now.
Speaking of philosophy, Deadbubbles is full of it, especially on the recently released collection of old tracks, “24 Hr. Nemesis: The John Carpenter E.P.” Though the band today consists of vocalist Arlo White, guitarist Paul Humphrey and bassist Matt Martinez, the 2006 incarnation that recorded these first Deadbubbles tracks comprised only White and Humphrey. The Zappa-meets-MC5 garage assault that today’s Deadbubbles inflicts on unsuspecting audiences is nowhere to be found on “John Carpenter.” Instead, we find White and Humphrey — both of whom were unemployed at the time — creating a twisted, unpredictable soundtrack to an imaginary ’70s horror film. Lo-fi, low-budget and high-concept, the EP gives listeners the chance to see where Deadbubbles came from.
There aren’t many chances these days to catch Deadbubbles live. However, White now fronts dirty, punky bluesters the Pretty Sure. You can catch that act at 3 Kings Tavern on Saturday, Nov 27.
You can download “24 Hr. Nemesis: The John Carpenter E.P.” free from the . In the meantime, why don’t you steal “Frenchy,” from Deadbubbles’ “24 Hr. Nemesis,” you freeloader!
Finally, we have a little bonus for you this week from smiley chanteuse Jessica Sonner. With her heart on her sleeve and her fingers pounding the keys, ‘s wife has cranked out an uplifting, bouncy single that defies you to frown. You can — and should — buy “Keep on Dreaming” directly from , but you can stream a preview of it right here. After you do, you should head out to tonight to see Sonner perform with Denver’s own and from New York. Tickets are just $5, and the show starts at 8.
Please note that downloads offered via Steal This Track are intended to whet your appetite, and are NOT CD-quality recordings. If you want those, please support the artists by buying their music and/or seeing them live.
