DENVER—State lawmakers are questioning the oversight of Colorado’s weatherization program after state auditors reported improper cash advances to local governments, budget errors and problems with inspections.
This year, the energy office weatherized 7,440 buildings under federal programs, an increase of 105 percent over the previous year. The projects cost $32 million.
Auditors said they found a number of budget errors, including a $400,000 error in a bidder’s budget spreadsheet that did not calculate the total cost properly.
Director Tom Plant says the federal government requires electronic spreadsheets and he promised his office will do a better job reviewing the budgets.
