DENVER—The Drug Enforcement Administration in Denver says an international ring is posing as its agents and threatening people with arrest or a property search if they don’t pay a “fine” via wire transfer.

DEA spokesman Mike Turner says one victim who purchased a weight loss product wired several thousands of dollars to the Dominican Republic after being contacted by someone on the phone posing as a DEA agent.

Turner says people contacted by phone from someone claiming to be a DEA agent should report the call to the DEA at (877) 792-2873.

Investigations by the DEA are conducted in person, with cases handled by the courts.
