COMMERCE CITY, Colo.—Blake McNelis scored with less than five minutes to play in the second overtime Tuesday night, and St. Mary’s beat The Classical Academy 2-1 to claim the boys Class 3A state soccer championship.
Ben Fetter lofted a free kick from about 40 yards away, and McNelis headed the ball into the net for the game winner.
With the victory, sixth-seeded St. Mary’s (13-5-2) won its first boys state soccer title.
The Classical Academy (13-6-1), the No. 4 seed, took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute with a goal from Daylon Roitsch. St. Mary’s countered in the 54th minute with a header from Joe Morales.
The game, an all-Colorado Springs-area final originally scheduled for Nov. 9, was delayed one week due to poor weather.
