A 42-year-old man who robbed victims in Denver last spring by pretending to be a police officer was sentenced to prison this week.

Jerry John Gallegos was sentenced to six years in prison, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

On May 9, Gallegos stepped in front of a vehicle at West Third Avenue and Quitman Street, flashed a fake badge made of paper and asked the victim for identification, the DA’s office said in a media release. Gallegos then stole the victim’s wallet and car.

On May 17, Gallegos was involved in a similar incident at West Colfax Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, prosecutors said. In the second incident, Gallegos, dressed in blue and pretending to talk on a police radio, approached a stopped vehicle and stole the victim’s wallet and car keys. He then, however, couldn’t get the vehicle started and the ruse unraveled. In October, Gallegos pleaded guilty to robbery.
