Getting your player ready...

Almost from the day the Wyoming men’s basketball program signed 6-foot-10 forward Djibril Thiam out of Senegal four years ago, the Wyoming women’s program was aware he had a younger sister who was developing into quite a basketball player as well.

UW then developed a relationship with Fatima Thiam, and that relationship paid off when the 6-6 post player recently signed a letter of intent to play for the Cowgirls next year.

“It was a situation where we had to make sure that when the recruiting process was at the right time, we were able to make a pitch on behalf of Wyoming,” coach Joe Legerski said. “We’re fortunate enough that she wanted to come over here and be part of the program.”

Fatima Thiam will be the tallest player in UW women’s basketball history. Both of her parents played for the Senegalese national team.

“What we’re hoping for with her progression is that she can become a dominating force inside,” Legerski said.

Thiam is the fifth player to commit to the Cowgirls’ 2011 class. Also signed are Coloradans Alison Gorrell (guard, Evergreen), Kaitlyn Mileto (guard, Colorado Springs) and Jordan Sibrel (forward, Loveland), and forward Kayla Woodward of Sheridan, Wyo.
