Three children were in an apartment unit when a fire broke out at a complex in Denver just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Lt. Phil Champagne, spokesman for the Denver Fire Department, said the fire at the two-story apartment complex, at 10225 E. Girard Ave., took about 40 minutes to put out.
The children were in an apartment with an 18-year-old babysitter. Champagne said they were able to evacuate right away and called 911. The fire gutted the apartment in which the fire started. According to the Red Cross, four units had major damage and the residents of 16 units were displaced.
The cause is under investigation.
