LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Police in suburban Denver say a robbery suspect was unarmed when he was shot and killed by SWAT team members, but had told the officers they would have to shoot him.
Twenty-seven-year-old Jarrett Berlin died Thursday in Lakewood. Investigators say he was suspected of stealing a cash register earlier in the day.
The Denver Post reports that SWAT team members encountered Berlin in a stair well of an apartment building after the theft.
Authorities say Berlin initially raised his hands when ordered to do so by the SWAT team but then made the comment about shooting him. Authorities say Berlin dropped his hands and reached into a pocket, and SWAT team members fired several rounds.
Police say they didn’t find a weapon.
