A foundation has been created to help the Colorado Springs Police Department, where funding has been stagnant, attrition has thinned the ranks and often no officers are available to answer non-emergency calls.
A handful of residents have banded together to create the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs.
A 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the foundation would raise money to fund projects that have been rare in recent years for the department, organizers said.
The organization will operate independently of the police department, with no officers or department employees on the seven-person board of directors that will decide how to spend its funds, organizers said.
Details on what could be purchased in the coming years, however, have been vague.
The organization will take suggestions from Colorado Springs Police Chief Richard Myers on the department’s needs each year.
