PUEBLO — A 3-year-old Pueblo child died in a fire Monday afternoon, apparently playing with matches in the bedroom of an apartment.

The child has not been identified. The blaze happened about 4 p.m. in a four-apartment complex in the 1000 block of West 13th Street. No one else was injured.

The toddler was in the care of a babysitter. Whether anyone else was home at the time of the fire is under investigation, said Pueblo Fire Department spokesman Woody Percival.

“The sad thing is there was a smoke detector right outside the bedroom door, but there was no battery in it,” he said.
