Xcel Energy customers will see a 1 percent increase in electric bills and a 4 percent decrease in natural- gas bills starting Jan. 1 under a commodity-cost filing with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

Xcel files quarterly adjustments based on its costs of fuel for generating electricity and delivering natural gas.

Changes in commodity costs are passed directly to consumers, with Xcel taking no additional profit or loss.

Under the change, average monthly residential electric bills will rise from $62.44 to $63.04. Average gas bills will decrease from $88.09 to $84.86.
