The organizers of the Snow Ball Music Festival wouldn’t balk if you called their creation “Snowchella.”

The Snow Ball will be the first large-scale indie-music festival to rock the Rockies since the Monolith Festival petered out after three years in fall 2009. The festival, a mini-version of the annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Southern California, will take over the Vail Valley March 4-6.

The lineup already includes San Francisco dubstep heavyweight Bassnectar and Denver-based impresario Pretty Lights. Both DJs are a catch, considering their recent sellouts in the area — Bassnectar at the 1stBank Center and Pretty Lights at Red Rocks.

The Snow Ball concept dates back to February, when festival creator Chad Donnelly was struck with a vision.

“I thought, ‘Why isn’t there something that gives people the opportunity to experience unparalleled highs both on and off the mountain,’ ” said Donnelly. “Our goal is to provide a unique, intimate and fresh approach to music in the mountains.”

The Snow Ball will feature three nights of music just west of Vail — yes, outdoors. More information on the lineup and ticket prices is on its way — keep your eyes on Reverb, online at . But here are a couple of other acts linked to this year’s festival: critical darlings Local Natives; Alaska natives Portugal. The Man; Brooklyn buzz band Twin Shadow; and Colorado rock heroes Gauntlet Hair. The festival will sell bundles that include festival tickets, lift tickets and lodging.
