The chief of the Clear Creek Fire Authority was hit by a vehicle on U.S. 40 west of Empire early Tuesday while assisting the victim of an earlier crash.

Chief Kelly Babeon was helping the occupant of a 1989 Toyota pickup after a rollover accident that happened at 7:33 a.m., according to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid.

Babeon was airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, where he was listed in fair condition, said Bev Lilly, spokeswoman for the hospital.

Reid said Babeon was parked on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes of U.S. 40. At 7:55 a.m. the driver of a Ford Explorer Sport Trac — a combination SUV/pickup — lost control and hit Babeon. Howard Pankratz, The Denver Post
