Folks along the Front Range had wonderful seats overnight to this year’s only total eclipse of the moon.
The moon is normally illuminated by the sun. During the eclipse, the full moon passed through the Earth’s shadow as it blocks the sun’s light. Some indirect sunlight gave the moon a reddish color.
Because the eclipse coincided with winter solstice, the moon was high in the sky — a boon for sky watchers.
The next total lunar eclipse visible from North America won’t happen until Dec. 10, 2011.
