COLORADO SPRINGS — A child playing with a lighter sparked a blaze Sunday evening that left seven people homeless, said a Colorado Springs firefighter.

The fire started shortly after 5 p.m. in the bedroom of a unit at the Hunting Meadow Apartments, 4203 Hunting Meadows Drive, said Lt. Steve Wilch, Colorado Springs Fire Department spokesman. Firefighters arrived three minutes later and had the fire under control in nine minutes.

No one was hurt in the blaze. The American Red Cross planned to offer the occupants shelter for the night.

Damage was estimated at $10,000, Wilch said.
