PENROSE — A 17-year-old girl died Sunday morning when the car she was driving slammed into a tree in Penrose.
The Cañon City teen, identified as Samantha Gaunt, was driving a 1996 Ford Mustang shortly before 10 a.m. east on Fourth Street when she lost control. The Mustang spun and hit the tree on the driver’s side of the car, said Sgt. John Hahn, Colorado State Patrol spokesman.
She died at the scene. It is not known whether she was wearing a seat belt.
Troopers are investigating how the crash happened, though they suspect patches of ice on the road may have played a part, as well as speed.
