A 12-inch water main broken beneath East Evans Avenue just west of South University Boulevard just before lunch today, according to Stacy Chesney, spokeswoman for Denver Water.

The actual break occurred at 2217 E. Evans, which is in the middle of the University of Denver campus. The main was installed in 1928.

Classes are not in session today in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Chesney said there is no water at DU’s Penrose Library, which is just a few yards to the south of the break.

One eastbound lane and one westbound lane of Evans are open in the area of the break, said Chesney.

A 6-person Denver Water crew hopes to have repairs completed by 9 p.m., she said.
