“Carved by Time: Landscapes of the Southwest” ($75, Random House)

This book is just a treat, with page after page of photographs from the Four Corners states of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Photographer Jake Rajs does a terrific job of using the light to balance red rock and dramatic skies, and he includes the usual favorite landscapes (Mesa Verde, Zion, Arches) as well as more remote locales in Navajo and Anasazi country, including petroglyphs and dwellings. Canyons, open desert, rivers and foliage receive his respectful treatment, and especially eye-catching are the snow scenes. Kyle Wagner
