An inmate at a maximum security prison in Florence was found guilty Thursday of assaulting a correctional officer with a handmade weapon.
In November 2009, Timothy Doyle Young, 52, attempted to stab an officer with a sharpened metal instrument also known as a “shank,” according the U.S Attorney’s Office in Denver. Young was subdued before the guard was injured.
In 1990, Young was convicted of armed bank robbery in Oregon and sentenced to 40 years in a federal prison. During the first 11 years of his sentence, Young was involved in “multiple incidents,” resulting in his transfer to the maximum security complex in Florence.
Young faces to up to 20 years in a federal prison and fines of up to $250,000. Sentencing was scheduled for May 16. The sentencing judge will decided whether Young’s sentence will be served consecutively to his current sentence.
The jury deliberated for about 25 minutes before finding Young guilty of assault on a federal officer with a deadly or dangerous weapon. The trial, heard before U.S. District Judge Marcia S. Krieger, lasted just over two days.
