SANTA ANA, Calif.—Former Orange County sheriff Michael Carona has turned himself in to a federal prison in Colorado to begin serving time on a witness-tampering conviction.
Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Victoria Joseph says Carona surrendered Tuesday morning at the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Littleton, Colo.
Carona reported to prison shortly before a Southern California hearing that would have set a date for his surrender.
The three-term lawman once dubbed “America’s Sheriff” was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison.
He was indicted in a sweeping public corruption case that included allegations of marital infidelity, cronyism and money-laundering. He was exonerated of other charges filed by prosecutors.
Carona appealed the conviction but lost earlier this year.
