An man was hospitalized last night after firefighters found him unconscious in his Englewood apartment.
Shortly after 1 a.m. the Englewood Fire Department responded to a call at 3666 S. Acoma St. about an oven vent that was overheating, according to Englewood Fire Marsha, Marla Wilcox.
Firefighters were leaving that third-floor apparent when one firefighter went down a separate staircase and heard a smoke detector going off. After following the sound of the alarm, the firefighter noticed smoke coming from inside a first-floor apartment. All units were called back to the scene.
Upon entering the apartment firefighters found a man less than 10 feet from the door.
The fire was in the front part of the apartment. It had been burning so long it had “burned itself out,” Wilcox said. The fire was completely unrelated to the initial call on the third floor.
The victim was immediately taken from the apartment to a hospital. The nature of his injuries and his medical condition were not released.
The cause of the fire in the man’s apartment is still under investigation. The damage was minimal and contained to the first-floor apartment.
