TOKYO — An unmanned Japanese space vehicle reached the international space station late Thursday. Japan’s JAXA space agency said the “Kounotori2,” which was launched on a rocket Saturday, was grabbed by the station’s robotic arm just before midnight. It is carrying nearly 6 tons of food, water, clothing and equipment to the astronauts.
After dropping off its cargo and picking up waste, “Kounotori2” will head back to Earth and burn up upon re- entering the atmosphere.
Such projects have become more important since the U.S. is retiring its space shuttles, limiting NASA’s ability to launch supplies. The Associated Press
