SALIDA — Authorities have identified the driver of a gasoline tanker who died in a fiery crash that closed U.S. 50 between Salida and Swissvale for about seven hours.

Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman identified the driver as 78-year-old Allen Hubbard of Denver, who has been in the tanker business for 60 years.

Authorities said preliminary reports indicate that he was heading east on U.S. 50 about 9 a.m. Friday when the tanker went off the road on a curve, overturned and exploded about 14 miles east of Salida.
