After a 17-month sabbatical, Colorado’s Van Halen-ed rockers are ramping up a comeback. The brothers Sproul — guitar shredders Jake and Daniel — threw down a fiery yet intimate show at the Oak Tavern Friday night, eliminating any fears the band might have lost its kick during its downtime. Fresh off the heels of a reportedly rowdy New Years run in Boulder, the four-top’s raw, punk-fused Allman-Zeppelin sound shook the tavern’s floor. Drummer Nathan Barnes’ 18-inch bass drum, joined by Daniel on his sunburst Les Paul and Stratocaster, even drowned out the shoes-in-the-dryer dance beats spilling from the tavern’s upstairs nightclub. The quick show mixed some new material — like the explosive “Psychoanalyst Conundrum” with classics and even a delicious cover of the Beatles’ “Birthday.”
