The superintendent of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo has resigned to return to psychiatric work.

John M. DeQuardo, 53, has been superintendent of the institute since July 1, 2007. His resignation will be effective Friday, according to a release from the Colorado Department of Human Services.

DeQuardo will work at the admissions unit of the Robert L. Hawkins Institute for Forensic Psychiatry as a psychiatrist.

Teresa Bernal was named interim superintendent.
