BILLINGS, Mont. — Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer has signed an executive order blocking the shipment of hundreds of Yellowstone National Park bison to slaughter.
The Democratic governor said he is worried the shipments could spread the disease brucellosis to livestock. He says he wants to send a message to federal officials that a new approach is needed on managing bison. In the interim, he says, the park should bring in hay to feed the 525 bison captured as they migrated to lower elevations for food.
