FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Fort Collins man accused of sexually assaulting and fatally beating his common-law wife has been ordered to stand trial for second-degree murder.

The Loveland Reporter-Herald reports a judge ruled Wednesday that there’s enough evidence against 48-year-old John Marks Jr. to be tried in the death of 57-year-old Kathy Adams. Marks is also charged with sexual assault.

Adams’ body was found last fall in a ravine between Lyons and Estes Park in northern Colorado after her family reported her missing

Larimer County sheriff’s investigator John Newhouse testified Wednesday that Adams’ niece said she heard Marks threaten to kill Adams shortly before she disappeared.

Marks’ attorney says relatives who might benefit from her life insurance weren’t investigated.

Marks is due in court March 25 for a hearing on the case’s status.
