Cable television giant Comcast is shifting some network programming operations from the Comcast Media Center in Centennial to New Jersey, a move that means layoffs at the center.
One source inside the company said dozens of workers will lose their jobs. The Comcast Media Center, or CMC, has about 600 employees.
The relocation of technical jobs tied to several TV programming networks to Englewood Cliffs, N.J., will take place over the next 12 to 18 months, said Comcast spokeswoman Cindy Parsons. Those channels include Sprout, Versus and Comcast’s regional sports networks.
Affected workers will have the option to apply for another job within Comcast.
“For those individuals who are unable to find other roles within the company, we will provide them a severance package as well as assistance in finding a new position,” Parsons said.
Englewood Cliffs is home to the majority of NBCUniversal’s cable networks, Parsons said. Philadelphia-based Comcast closed its acquisition of NBCUniversal this year.
“This move will enable the company to standardize technical procedures, and more easily facilitate content sharing across networks,” Parsons said.
The CMC, a business unit of Comcast, currently pulls content from satellites for 86 TV channels and distributes that programming to end users and other operators.
Content from many of those networks will continue to originate from the media center after the transition.
Comcast serves about 840,000 subscribers in Colorado. The company has 5,500 employees in the state.
