Twenty-nine people are displaced this morning after a fire at a Denver apartment building.
The fire started at 2:33 a.m. at an apartment building at 1110 North Xanthia St. in Denver, according to Phil Champagne, spokesman for the Denver Fire Department.
It took 36 firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, and 19 children and 10 adults were evacuated from the building.
The fire appears to have started in the attic of the two story building, Champagne said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
No one was injured in the blaze, Champagne said.
Resident Claudia Torres, 30, said she felt the heat from the fire when she woke up to the blaze in her home. She quickly grabbed her two daughters, 5 and 8 years old, and immediately ran outside with her husband.
“I listened to the noise, I smelled the smoke,” Torres said.
Monday morning, Torres was still waiting to see if she and her family could go into the building to grab some belongings.
The building was severely damaged by smoke and water, according to Christopher Dunn of the Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross, which arrived on scene at 4:15 this morning.
Of the eight units in the building, only one was completely destroyed.
The building has no gas or water, Dunn said. The Red Cross has set up a shelter and is working with one of the building’s owners to get residents food and clothes.
“We’re doing all we can do to make sure everyone is safe, sound and warm,” Dunn said.
